Planning Your Thailand Trip Without a Travel Agency

On your own, with an agency or with a travel planner? An honest comparison: who does what, what it costs and when each option is the right one.

Kayak dans la mangrove en Thaïlande

Yes, you can plan a trip to Thailand without a travel agency, and that is what most independent travellers do. There are three ways to go about it. Do everything yourself, which takes dozens of hours of research. Go through a travel agency, which books everything for you and adds a margin on each service. Or work with a travel planner, who designs your itinerary and lets you book it yourself, with no commission. I am a travel planner and I have lived in Thailand for more than three years, so here is an honest comparison of the three options, mine included, without overselling anything.

Option 1, doing everything yourself

It costs nothing in money and teaches you a lot. Many of my travellers started this way, and some still do, with a simple advice call to check their plan. But let's be honest. Planning a trip in Southeast Asia takes dozens of hours of research, between contradictory blogs, seasons to decipher, domestic transport to piece together and online reviews to sift through.

The traps I see most often

  • Choosing the wrong coast. Booking Koh Lanta in August or Koh Samui in November, in the middle of the local monsoon.
  • Adding too many stops. Six cities in two weeks means half the trip is spent in transit.
  • Picking a hotel for its rating without looking at the area, and ending up thirty minutes from everything.
  • Booking domestic flights too late, when prices have doubled.
  • Paying for a standard tourist activity when a better, cheaper local version exists two streets away.
  • Pros, total freedom, no middleman, the pride of a trip built from scratch
  • Cons, time-consuming, risk of mistakes on season and logistics, stress before and during the trip

Option 2, the traditional travel agency

Reassuring and turnkey. You pay, the agency books, you go. But that comfort has a price that does not appear on the invoice. Agencies earn a margin on every hotel, every transfer and every excursion, and they work from a catalogue of partner suppliers. The result is often a standardised tour shaped around the margin, in a rigid framework where changing a single night costs a fee.

There are cases where an agency is still the right choice. A large group, a business trip, someone who absolutely does not want to handle anything, or specific financial guarantees. I tell my travellers so when that applies.

  • Pros, everything is taken care of, a single contact, the protections of a package holiday
  • Cons, fixed itineraries, built-in commissions, little personalisation, bookings that are not in your name

Option 3, the travel planner

This is my job, so I will describe it simply. I am not an agency. I sell nothing and I take no commission. I design your itinerary from scratch, I select two to four accommodation and transport options for each stop, I give you my addresses and my on-the-ground advice, and you book yourself, at the direct price, using the links I send you. The bookings are in your name, and you keep control and full transparency over every franc you spend.

What you actually receive

A tailor-made itinerary, a digital travel book with all the booking links, a selection of activities and local addresses, and WhatsApp support seven days a week during your stay.

How much does a travel planner cost?

My support is charged per day of travel planned, depending on the package. You know the amount from the quote, which is free, like the discovery call. The fee pays for the time spent with you and the research. Everything else, flights, hotels, activities and transport, you pay at the direct price. The details are on the Services page.

Is it really cheaper than an agency?

The fee is known in advance, and everything else is paid at the direct price, with no margin. The savings come from that, and from local tips: a better-placed hotel at the same price, an excursion booked on the spot rather than online, a shared transfer instead of a private one when that is enough. In most cases, these savings cover the fee. I won't promise that it always works out that way, as it depends on your travel style.

  • Pros, genuinely tailor-made, time saved, local tips, freedom kept, total transparency
  • Cons, it is not free, and you do the booking clicks yourself

How it works with me, in eight steps

  1. You write to me through the contact form, and I reply within 24 to 48 hours.
  2. You fill in a short questionnaire: dates, wishes, budget, travellers.
  3. We have a free discovery call with no commitment.
  4. I send you a first version of the itinerary with the quote.
  5. Once you approve the quote, I prepare the selection of accommodation and transport for each stop.
  6. You book yourself, using my direct links.
  7. You receive your complete travel book: bookings, day-by-day programme, tips and addresses.
  8. You leave, and I stay reachable on WhatsApp for your whole stay.

So, how do you choose?

If you love planning and have the time, go for it on your own. It is a great adventure, and my two-week itinerary will give you a solid base. If you want something turnkey with no questions asked, and standard tours suit you, an agency will do the work. And if you want a one-of-a-kind trip without spending your evenings on it, while keeping control of your bookings and your budget, that is exactly where I come in.

My role is to save you time, money and worry, not to take your trip away from you.

The questions I get

I live in Switzerland, France or Belgium, does that change anything?

No, everything happens remotely, by form, WhatsApp and video call. Prices are in Swiss francs, also shown in euros as a guide.

What if I have already booked part of the trip?

I pick up your itinerary where it stands and help you with what is missing, one region or just the activities.

What happens if a hotel cancels or a ferry is cancelled?

You write to me. I am in Thailand and I help you find a solution within the hour. The refund steps remain yours since the bookings are in your name, but you don't go through them alone.

I just want an opinion on my plan, is that possible?

Yes, that is the one-hour advice call, to go over your itinerary, correct any mistakes on season or logistics and answer all your questions.

Still hesitating? The first conversation is free and without commitment. We talk about your project, and you will quickly see whether my support is right for you. You will find more answers in the FAQ.
